As for landscapes there are various types of mountains up to 3000 m above sea level, volcanoes, extensive desert inhabited by Bedouin tribes, sky reaching sheep walks and terrace fields. Two sea coasts, the one along Red Sea show African influence and the southern one along Arabian Sea has been affected by Indian culture. Thus there are lots to see, learn and experience while cruising around Yemen.

Brief description of main destinations: Shibam-Kawkaban, Zakati, Bokur, Mahweet, Hadjjarah, Hadjjah, Al Shahil, Atur, Al Chushm, At Taweela, Thulla, Hababa, Shahara- picturesque mountain villages with fascinating views ancient architecture usually having water cistern for cumulating rain water. Aden – former capital of South Yemen, significant port and free trade zone by south coast. The old city called “Crater” lies in a crater of a dead volcano. The oldest constructions perhaps from the Sabean period are the Aden Tanks at the southern edge of the crater. There is evident British colonial architecture and tolerance towards night clubs and alcohol sale. Aden is rapidly expanding destination for regional tourism. (South-west coast) Amran– The old city is surrounded by ancient wall and an engraved stone with Sabean inscription is placed above the main city gate. Many mud houses built on stone bases. (north of Sana’a) Bir Ali– These days only a lagoon with snow-white beach and simple shelters for camping. In the 15th cent. BC this was the start of the famous “Frankincense route” from Qana port. (South-east coast) Bura’a– – Bura’a Natural Protected Park covers the south-western slopes of Mountain Bura’a and represents an exceptional example of natural, dense and resistant jungle. Apart from acacia, myrrh and dessert rose trees, the jungle also contain a stunning fauna of migratory birds and butterflies, hyenas and large troops of baboon monkeys. (East Yemen) Jibbla – 1067-1138 AD capital of Queen Arwa from the dynasty of Suleyhis. Well preserved old city, mosques from the Queen’s period and a local museum. (South Yemen) Hodeida – The biggest port in the Red Sea as well as the biggest fish market in the region. Fresh delicious fish available which you can have roasted in the tanoors alongside by the beach. (West coast) Hutaib – In the 16th cent. AD home of Hatim Al Hamdani preacher of the Ismaili Shi’i sect whose followers come as pilgrims to pray at the tomb of the preacher from India. There is a small mosque on the top of the rock with fascinating view. (Haraz Mountains, West Yemen) Chocha – Laid back Red Sea resort with apparent African influence. Simple bungalows but relaxing beach with palm trees and coral reefs. (West coast)
Marib Sada – This is the whole northern area close to Saudi-Arabian border. The Sada city is surrounded by ancient walls there is The Great Mosque and fortress of the Imams on central hill. There is a mountain 10 km north from Sada with remains of ancient castle “Ummu Leila” (Mother of the Night) on its top. Further north of Sada is another Mountain Munaba which is home to the Flower people who wear wreaths of knitted flowers around their heads.
Sana’a– Today’s capital which according to a legend was established by Shem the son of Noah however the first records mentioning this city are dated to 1st cent. AD. Completely preserved old city with parts of walls has been added to UNESCO list in the mid 70’s. Unique atmosphere of the old market with hostels for traders and their animals (Samsarat), original Turkish baths, large gardens but particularly 14 000 houses of exceptional architecture, some of them 9 floors high. The central Great Mosque was built during the life of Prophet Mohamed in 6th cent. AD. You may also visit the National and University Museum with an exhibition of mummies. Socotra – Island south east of Yemeni coast east of Somalia in Arabian Sea. It’s called the Galapagos of Indian Ocean since most of its fauna and flora is endemic, there are some species that survived since the Mesozoic period. Most famous are the Dragon’s Blood Tree (Dracaena cinnabari), bottle trees, desert roses, myrrh trees, etc. Bird watchers can observe 7 species and 11 subspecies of endemic birds. The true paradise for eco tourists. Socotra is unreachable from May to September due to seasonal monsoons. Shibam-Hadramawt – Eight floors high mud houses the first skyscrapers of the world in the middle of Hadramawt Valley dating back to 3rd cent. AD. Those 500 houses prove the exceptional skills of those early builders and the city was added to the UNESCO’s list in 1982. (East Yemen, Hadramawt Valley) Tarim– Once important centre of Islamic teachings and extensive library of Islamic literature. There are some 300 mosques from which the most known is 50 m high Mudhdar mosque. (East Yemen, Hadramawt Valley) Ta’iz– Until 1962 it was the capital of Yemen and the headquarters of Imam Ahmed. Remains of the city walls with bastions from 13th cent. AD at the bottom of Saber Mountain from which you may observe the whole city. Nearby hill is topped by Al Qahira fortress build during Rasulid dynasty. Al Mozafar mosque near Ta’iz whose minaret collapsed and Al Ashrafia with twin minarets belong to the most beautiful mosques in Yemen. (South Yemen) Zabid– It was the most famous and the biggest Islamic University in fact a system of schools at each of the 80 mosques build already during the life of Prophet Mohamed. Zabid was in the early times huge city, today we can see just the ancient market with unique prehistoric atmosphere, houses of white burnt bricks and Al Nasser palace from the 14th cent. AD. Zabid is on the list of UNESCO.
